Michele Franci is a Senior satellite telecommunications system expert specialized in international space and telecommunications technology. He has 30 years of experience in space program development and management, ranging from technology design and development, to operations, sales, marketing and strategy and C-level management. Michele has a vast experience with all space technology development companies around the world, and long-standing experience with setting up and managing institutional programs with the European Space Agency. He has also a direct experience in management of multi-billion dollars, complex, multi-national, long duration programs, building lasting relationships with customers and partners, ability to influence, and conflict resolution. Michele has led the procurement of over 15 satellite programs, form inception to deployment in orbit, and managed multiple competitive satellite and launch vehicle purchase campaigns, from the RFQ throughout contract negotiations.
Michele is currently working as Independent Consultant across the space telecommunications value chain, advising clients on new technology introduction and business development opportunities with satellite operators, launch agencies, satellite manufacturers, equipment developers and ground systems companies.
Previously, Michele was a Chief Technology Officer at Inmarsat PLC in London, he was member of the executive team leading a group of approx. 300 engineers and developers over three continents. He was responsible for the technology roadmap and all subsequent development activities and programs covering the full scope of the Inmarsat space telecommunication networks, from space segment, radio access and ground networks and terminals and customer premises equipment. Before that, Michele worked as VP Commercial GX Program for Inmarsat SA in Switzerland, responsible for the Inmarsat space and ground infrastructure (network and access technology), and product and service development.
Michele previously worked for SES as SVP Planning and Procurement, leading satellite and launch vehicle procurement and planning activities across the SES Operating Companies. He was also part of the SES Engineering management committee, responsible for the SES fleet management and deployment, mission design and development, satellite and launcher procurement and risk management. Before that, he was VP Business Development for Arianespace, leading the marketing group, including commercial strategy and proposals, the long term strategic developments, sales oversight.
Michele holds a National Italian Certified Engineer and a Master’s degree in Space and Aeronautical Engineering in 1986 from the “Politecnico of Milano” based in Milan, Italy. He speaks fluently four languages: Italian, French, English, and Dutch.
